As of May 4, 2022, SGI and the Ministry of Highways have decided to discontinue the production of physical copies of the Saskatchewan Truckers’ Guide. This digital copy can be downloaded or printed. Currently the digital copy can only be accessed on computers or tablets with the mobile version to be available shortly. As of April 18th, 2022, SGI will be changing its policy regarding deferring an inspection on a vehicle that requires one. Deferring an inspection allows for the creation of a conditional registration that lasts for 28 days to allow you time to have the inspection completed. Previously you could defer the inspection on any vehicle for 28 days once, two 8-day permits and four 24-hour permits. Now the 28-day deferral is only available if IRE responds. If IRE does not respond at the time of the transaction only the 24- hour or 8 day permit options will be available until IRE responds. There are three possible situations where an inspection may be deferred. The vehicle was previously registered out of province. If the vehicle was purchased from a dealership brand new and the New Vehicle Information Statement (NVIS) is brought in. IRE stands for Interprovincial Record Exchange (IRE). The IRE is used mainly for looking up driver records when someone moves from one province to another or from the USA to Canada and vice versa. An additional feature of the IRE is that it can also lookup vehicle records if it was previously registered in another province. Individuals or businesses cannot access the IRE; it can only be accessed by the government, government agencies, and government corporations like SGI.

The Saskatchewan Government has authorized SGI to send out rebates again this year due to the recent increase in fuel prices. The rebates are $100/vehicle registered on or before March 9th, 2022. This applies to cars, trucks, vans, SUVs, Power Units, motorcycles, regardless of the plate class. Unfortunately, the rebate does not apply to trailers and snowmobiles. SGI has not given an exact date when they expect to send out the rebate cheques, but they have said to expect them sometime in late spring. Scammers have taken advantage of this situation and are sending texts to people claiming to either be SGI or a representative from SGI, saying that to get the rebate, you must click on a link and enter the information on the page that comes up. DO NOT CLICK ON THE LINK as SGI will not text you. They will send you either a letter or an email if you have provided SGI with an email address.

Follow these simple steps: When leaving your vehicle, make sure the visible interior is empty. Lock parcels and other valuables in the trunk. Remove your stereo's faceplate and take it with you whenever you leave your vehicle. If this option isn't possible, consider investing in a vehicle anti-theft device like a vehicle alarm. Never leave your vehicle running and unattended, even with the car locked. Always shut windows tightly and lock all doors. Don't leave a set of keys in the vehicle and don't mark your keys with personal identification or your vehicle's licence plate number. Don't leave your vehicle registration in your car. Avoid parking your vehicle in dark areas or near trees or fences, which provide hiding places for thieves. Always keep your vehicle inside the garage, if you have one. Keep all doors and windows of both the vehicle and garage shut and locked.

This October SGI will be making a few changes to the Safe Driver Recognition program. You start in a neutral position on the scale and begin to gain or lose points based on your driving habits. Your position on the scale is based on your driving record. In neutral on the scale, you'll receive neither a discount nor a surcharge and will pay the base insurance premium. You gain points for a good driving record, which moves you towards or into the scale's Safety Zone. Each point in the Safety Zone gives you a discount off your vehicle plate insurance, to a maximum of 25%. You lose points for certain driving incidents, such as an at-fault collision or a traffic conviction, which moves you towards or into the Penalty Zone.
